Brief Description
KTH was founded in 1827 and has since grown to be Sweden’s largest and most respected technical university. Being a KTH student involves more than just engaging in studies. By choosing KTH, you will gain access to vibrant student life and a prestigious academic environment.
KTH conducts world-class research in an array of technology and engineering fields. Its strong research reputation has reinforced the university’s position as one of the highest-ranked technical universities in Europe and a force to be reckoned with globally. KTH was placed number 89 in the world among all universities in QS World University Ranking 2023. To meet tomorrow’s challenges, KTH offers education and research that attracts talent from all over the world.

Course Restrictions
Students must take 50% of the courses at one school. You can find a list of the different schools here. Architecture courses are not open for exchange students.

KTH defines educational levels as follows: first cycle = year 1-3 (Basic level), second cycle = year 4-5 (Advanced/Master’s level)

Academic levels range from A to D, where A = introductory level and D = advanced level. Please carefully study the course prerequisites for courses at level B, C and D. You must meet the prerequisites to be able to take a course, and keep in mind that the number of spots can be limited. KTH sometimes allows undergraduate exchange students to take courses at graduate level.

For information on the level, prerequisites and time period of a course, see the database with course descriptions which is available here. This page provides an explanation of course codes.

Students are required to study full time (30-40 hours a week). There is no specified minimum amount of ECTS that students have to take, but due to this requirement students should not expect to complete less than 25 ECTS points per semester at KTH.

Language of Instruction
Courses are offered in either Swedish or English. KTH offers around 60 master’s programmes taught in English.

Academic Strengths
KTH Royal Institute of Technology has served as one of Europe’s key centres of innovation and intellectual talent for almost two hundred years. Recognized as Sweden’s most prestigious technical university, KTH is also the country’s oldest and largest. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all the branches of engineering and includes architecture, industrial management and urban planning. The educational programmes lead to Bachelor, Master or PhD degrees in engineering, science, or architecture. With over 18,000 students and an international reputation for excellence, the university continues to nurture the world’s brightest minds, helping to shape the future. With a strong history of groundbreaking research, KTH provides one third of Sweden’s technical and engineering research at university level. The university also secures substantial research funding every year with grants from important organizations like the European Research Council, and plays a central role in the newly formed European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Students will join over 2,000 people engaged in research at KTH and find a multitude of opportunities to grow in their individual areas of focus. The KTH Campus is located in Stockholm, the Capital of Scandinavia and the home of the Nobel Prize.

Student Life
KTH has five campuses in and around Stockholm, with fast public transport connecting them and central Stockholm. Each campus is situated near accommodation, parks, sports facilities, restaurants, shopping and entertainment.

If you are interested in sports, you have a wide range of options as a student at KTH. A few examples for each campus are given below. Outdoor recreation, fitness and wellness, indoor sports, golfing, horseback riding and an indoor swimming pool. More information about the life at campus can be found here: http://ths.kth.se/international/

Having a bicycle in Stockholm is a good way to get around. You can use your bike most of the year, except during the winter months when it snows too much and the streets are icy. You can rent a bike or buy one. For used bikes you can go to sites like www.blocket.se and search for ”Bicycles” in Stockholm. The word ”care” means used / second hand. Or post notes on campus! There are a lot of different repair shops around town that can help you fix the bike into better condition.

Housing
KTH accommodation department will help you, although they cannot promise accommodation to all incoming students. There is no accommodation on campus for exchange students.
